83 Movie Review
83 not only captures the emotional resonance of the underdogs’ triumph story but also presents a well-researched record in the popular vernacular. It comes through early in the film when Kabir gives us a beautiful narrative about the team photograph, combining the real and the fictitious.
Kabir has recreated real images with reel ones at every stage of movie-making. This makes one sit up and notice that he has heavily invested in research and the recreation of defining moments in Team India’s 1983 World Cup journey. You realise that the film was not only about drama or sport; it made a concerted effort to combine the two. And, to a significant extent, it succeeded.

When you hear Ranveer Singh nailing Kapil Dev’s straightforward manner of speaking, precisely duplicating his Natraj shot on the ground, bowling movement, and body language, you know you’re in the midst of a sports drama centred around cricket. But when you hear him talk about why he thinks, believes, and feels the way he does for the sport, you hear a guy telling you what makes him a notable name in the game.
Whether it’s Kapil’s friendship with Sunil Gavaskar (Tahir Bhasin), the carefree ways of Sandeep Patil (Chirag Patil), or Mohinder Amarnath (Saqib Salim) living in the shadow of his renowned father Lala Amarnath, the plot is interlaced with essential facts, trivia, and little-known curios. More crucially, Kabir and co-writers Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan and Vasan Bala have contextualised them. The cricket action, captured by Aseem Mishra, doesn’t appear contrived, and the sound of reggae – every time Richards takes the guard — adds to the atmosphere.
Apart from Ranveer, Jiiva gets Krish Srikkanth’s swashbuckling soul about correct, but Pankaj Tripathi, as the team manager, appears a touch too anxious to uncork the audience’s weeping ducts. The casting of Mohinder and Mali Marshall in the parts of their legendary dad is a welcome surprise, as is Deepika Padukone’s appearance as the fashionable Romi Dev. But some of the selections are perplexing; Hardy Sandhu couldn’t get Madan Lal’s body language right, and Vivian Richards (Jacques Taylor) has been reduced to a gum-chewing man. You can’t become Clive Lloyd by simply donning spectacles! Some of the West Indian fast bowlers’ hairstyles are crazy. The picture deserved a stirring music composition, but Pritam falls short of expectations.

83 The Film: Final Verdict
Kabir Khan’s ’83 faithfully recreates that day, and, yes, let it be acknowledged, in full Bollywood style, drenched with song, dance, drama, and colour. The scenes look as good as the real incidents on the field. Ranveer’s performance is also good, he had put tremendous effort to get different aspects of the legendary Kapil Dev right.
